Scholarship Information
High school seniors, graduating juniors or first semester graduating seniors whose parents or legal guardians are members of Choptank Electric are eligible to apply for college scholarships awarded by the Choptank Electric Trust, Inc.

Six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in May 2008. Recipients are chosen based on a competitive screening process. The scholarship funds are sent directly to the educational institution the student will attend and placed in the student's account.

The deadline to apply for a Choptank Electric Trust Scholarship is March 31, 2008. Applications, a scholastic information form and a financial information form must be sent by the deadline along with an essay as outlined in the application and a transcript of the student's grades to:

The applications and information forms should be available through the guidance office at area high schools.

The Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives Scholarship Foundation will also award scholarships of $500 and $1,000. The deadline to apply for a VMDAEC Education Foundation Scholarship is April 1, 2008. Applications are available online at www.co-opliving.com/community/scholarship.htm or by mail by writing to:

Choptank Electric and the Choptank Electric Trust have awarded $40,000 in scholarships to deserving students since 1999.

Essay/Application Requirements
  • All applicants must complete this two-part essay question: "Why do you feel a college education is important and how will this scholarship benefit you?" Your essay must be limited to two typed, double-spaced pages.
  • In addition to your essay, please provide a cover page with your name, address and home telephone number. Do not place your name on any other page of the essay.
  • Reference letters are required. Letters may be from school administrators, teachers, civic/business leaders, clergy or neighbors. Please limit to three references. Letters may not be submitted from relatives.
  • The Scholastic Information Form must be completed by your counselor or other appropriate school official and be submitted along with your application to: Choptank Electric Trust Scholarship, Attn: Anne Whaples, P.O. Box 426, Denton MD 21629, by the deadline date for your application to be considered by the Scholarship Committee.
  • Please include a transcript of grades with your application.
Finalists may be required to provide additional information as deemed necessary by the Committee.

PLEASE NOTE: Application and essay deadline is March 31, 2008. Be sure all required forms are included. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Some public school systems have students pursuing the option of graduating at the end of their junior year, having achieved a maximum of 24 academic credits and having met minimum attendance requirements. There are also some seniors who choose to complete their high school program in January of their senior year. All students who have met the required criteria for their public school system and will graduate in 2008 and who provide all of the application requirements for this scholarship will be considered.
